How can I become a referee?

The first question for someone desiring to become a soccer referee is, “how old are you”?

Once you have determined that you are old enough to become a referee, you must then register for either a Grade 8 or Grade 9 Entry Level class, complete the requirements and pay the appropriate registration fee for whichever class you choose. There are two possible entry classes depending upon age:

  • One is the Grade 9 referee class and it is primarily for those under 14 years of age. This class qualifies a person to referee only recreational youth level games at U14 and below age levels.
  • The other class is the Grade 8 Entry class for those 14 and older. It qualifies one to referee all levels of youth play, both recreational and competitive, based upon one’s age, experience, capabilities and desire. Adult Class Content

Once you complete the entry level clinic and pass the tests, your name will be distributed to all assignors in the state for game assignments.

Should you have any questions about what to do, please contact your Area Referee Administrator.

Do I need to recertify each year?

Yes, you must attend a re-certification clinic each year. Your certification is based on a calendar year. Beginning in August of each year, re-certification clinics are held throughout the state for the next year. Clinics will be offered through February. The cost is $60.00 for Grade 8 and 9 referees.. You must take and pass an on-line test prior to attending the class.

If you became a referee after July 1st of any year, you are certified for the remainder of that year as well as the following year. If you certified between Jan 1st and June 30th of any year, you are only certified for the current year and you must attend a re-certification clinic for the following year.

How do I get assignments?

Although all assignors are aware that you are a certified, it is best to be proactive and contact each assignor in your area.

Each assignor may assign matches in a different way, so be prepared to provide your email address and phone number. You may also be asked to subscribe to an on-line assigning service. Your performance on the field will dictate the types of assignments you get. This includes professionalism – how you are dressed, your attitude, punctuality, and knowledge of the Laws of the Game.

How do I transfer from another state?

The US Soccer registration database does not allow for transfers among states after initial certification for a given year.

When you move you must change your address in the US Soccer database and notify the South Carolina SRA that you are moving to the state. At that time your information can be transferred to screferees.gameofficials.net. At the next recertification opportunity you sign up for a class through that site and your transfer will be complete.

Please note that your certification allows you to referee in any state in the United States.
